This dissertation addresses two research objectives: 1) to investigate the existential experiences of spouses/partners living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors, and 2) to develop a theoretical model focused on the concept of existential shattering. The dissertation reviewed published narratives on the experiences of spouses whose partner suffered from TBI. The purpose was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of TBI survivor's spouses/partners. The value of gaining additional understanding is to improve support and care for those suffering from life altering events. The new knowledge contributes an additional guide for directing healthcare professionals and practitioners in developing care plans and implementing supportive interventions. The dissertation also examined the research on fear, anxiety, stress, trauma, and potential for positive growth in the aftermath of tragedies as a foundation for the theoretical concept of existential shattering. The theory development was based on the methods of concept analysis, concept advancement, integrative review, and diagrammatic reasoning. The conceptual theory of transcending existential shattering is presented by three paradigms: 1) narrative, 2) visual, and 3) exemplified through the impact of TBI on survivor's partner/spouses. A critical review of the literature on traumatic brain injury shows the complexity of brain function and illustrates how damage negatively affects the survivor. Trauma to the brain frequently causes pervasive cognitive dysfunction and a variety of personality changes, including impulsivity, unpredictability, anger, lack of critical thinking, lack of empathy, and lack of awareness about one's own impairments. These problematic issues have a negative impact on the marital/couple relationship, family dynamics, and relationships in general. Yet, a meaningful and supportive relationship can contribute to the TBI-survivor's healing from TBI related life changes and psychological trauma. This dissertation adds to the growing body of literature on TBI by addressing the phenomenological experiences of the TBI survivor's spouse/partner from an existential perspective and presents the concept of transcending existential shattering. The goal was to show that transcending life adversities such as TBI-related psychological trauma could lead to personal renewal.
