The purpose of this research was to examine the push-pull framework and activity involvement to better understand the determinants that influence the attractiveness of a mountain bike travel destination. An online survey, distributed through social media outlets of mountain bike clubs within North America, was used to collect data from mountain bikers. 1346 responses were collected over a three week period. Responses with missing data were excluded from analysis, resulting in a sample of N = 733. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), multiple regression analysis, and independent t-tests. The data analysis revealed individuals were attracted to a destination by the nine pull factors climate, natural landscape, information sources, tourism infrastructure, entertainment options, trail conditions, trail restrictions, trail features, and bike services. EFA revealed that travel was motivated by the five push factors competency-mastery, adventure experiences, novelty, stimulus-avoidance, and social encounters. The five push factors were found to have a correlation with the attractiveness of pull factors. Cluster analysis found that approximately 60% of the sample had a medium involvement with mountain biking, while 40% of the sample had a high involvement with mountain biking. Level of involvement with mountain biking was revealed to have an influence on the attractiveness of destination pull factors. The findings of the research indicated that destination pull factors, their correlation with push motives, and activity involvement influenced a mountain biker's perception of destination attractiveness. The findings may be beneficial to community stakeholders when planning and developing a mountain bike-specific travel destination.
