While previous research has examined the retirement transitions of elite athletes from various sports, no study has looked specifically at the retirement experiences of elite female gymnasts. This study investigated the retirement experiences of eight former elite female gymnasts, using qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews allowed the athletes to describe their experiences and led to the development of a model of the psychosocial aspects of their retirement transition. The model depicts retirement as a process involving three parts: disorientation, being in "Nowhere Land", and reorientation. The participants were also interviewed about their experiences as elite gymnasts. Data analysis revealed that the perceived degree of autonomy, pressure to control weight, as well as the roles of the coach, and the national sport organization were determinants of the quality of the gymnasts' experiences.
