The two-fold purpose of this study was to investigate the place of storytelling in classrooms and in teacher education programs and to develop a handbook to assist teachers in using effective storytelling skills. A review of current research supports the idea that the use of storytelling in classrooms results in benefits for teachers and students. The literature also revealed that storytelling is not frequently used in K-12 classroom settings. To provide guidance for the development of the handbook, four research activities were conducted: (1) a survey of teacher-preparation colleges to determine the kind and amount of training provided in the art of storytelling, (2) interviews with practicing teachers, (3) interviews with professional storytellers, and (4) a survey of under-graduate college students enrolled in a storytelling course. The resulting data from all sources overwhelmingly substantiated and validated the positive benefits of using storytelling in education. Teachers, students, and professional storytellers reiterated numerous times the importance and strength of using storytelling to provide interest, variety, and creativity to learning situations. Professors at institutions of higher learning also corroborated these findings and expressed concern over the lack of time to provide course work in the art of storytelling in under-graduate educational programs. It was concluded that storytelling is an important and valuable skill for teachers to use in their classrooms. Undergraduate curricula at teacher preparation institutions are filled to capacity with required course work which leads to the lack of time to provide training and education in storytelling for pre-service teachers. Therefore, an alternative, viable opportunity for teachers to develop this skill should be provided. A storytelling handbook was developed to provide the information and materials to inform and guide teachers who want to learn the art of storytelling and teach this art to their students.
