Students have such varying interests and strengths, especially at the elementary level. This means that teachers need to creatively adjust their instruction to cater to each child's strengths. One way to reach each student is to teach cross-curricular units-combining two curriculums. This study measured the effect that adding literacy into a STEM unit had on students' STEM learning. Participants were 17 third-grade students, and the unit was taught throughout ten days. Students were given a pretest and a posttest, on the literacy concept of cause and effect, in order to measure their knowledge prior to the unit, and their improvement following the unit. They also participated in an engineering design challenge following the last lesson, which tested their knowledge of the STEM unit they had learned-force and motion. Students generally preformed higher on the posttest, demonstrating a greater understanding of literacy, indicating that combining literacy into STEM curriculum had an impact on their STEM learning. Teachers should utilize cross-curricular lessons in order to diversity their instruction and reach each student.
