The United States' STEM ecosystem continues to be less diverse than the general population, and experiences significant shortages in STEM professionals. Several stakeholders, including the U.S. government, have called for countermeasures to address these STEM shortages and broaden the participation of underrepresented minority (URM) populations. STEM education research has shown that the implementation of certain intervention strategies and academic skills building programs have the potential to readily improve the persistence of URM students in STEM fields. This mixed method study incorporated both quantitative and qualitative information-gathering techniques. It investigated URM students' perceptions of the role of an off-campus summer STEM internship (which included students engaging in authentic research activities) on their ability to persist and remain in STEM fields. The findings reiterated the usefulness of STEM internships on URMs' STEM persistence as well as shed light on the importance of an early interventions to reduce attrition. The interns reported gains in communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills necessary to persist through STEM majors. The STEM retention for URMs was not significantly different from their White peers.
