This autoethnographic study of empathy in the emerging drama therapist evaluates various theoretical explanations of empathy in the fields of drama therapy, dance/movement therapy, and neuroscience. Viewing empathy through an embodied framework, the author explores how empathy manifests in herself vis-a-vis her drama therapeutic encounters with a client who elicits her somatic, affective, and cognitive countertransference. The author utilizes arts-based research including poetry, movement, and performance to cull from her senses in this intimate exploration of how empathy performs in her mind and body and facilitates the drama therapeutic transaction.
