SARS-CoV-2, commonly known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19 is a disease that can spread easily from person to person through respiratory droplets resulting in a global pandemic. Symptoms and complications resulting from this virus include fever, cough, loss of taste, and mild to severe upper respiratory issues affecting anyone at any age. Although signs and symptoms have been identified and months of research underway, this novel coronavirus leaves many unanswered questions surrounding transmission, detection and treatment. Those at high-risk for severe complications due to COVID-19 tend to be older adults and anyone with underlying medical issues. High-risk patients who contract COVID-19 may need to be intubated and placed on a ventilator to assist with respiration. When a patient begins to recover and is able to breathe independently, extubation will occur. However, patients with COVID-19 who are extubated may experience secondary complications and require follow-up treatment from medical professionals. The role of a speech-language-pathologist (SLP) for this extubated population has not been fully researched. This study investigated the role of the SLP in evaluation and treatment of patients with COVID-19 post-extubation. Responses were analyzed, reflecting similarities and group trends. Responses showed that patients did experience secondary complications, requiring an SLP consult to assess for voice and swallowing changes, thus requiring a diet modification while the patient continued their hospital stay. The commonalities amongst participants that were found in this research help lay the foundations for how SLPs are involved in treating the COVID-19 patient.
