There exists a need to improve student achievement, especially in low-performing urban public schools where there are many disadvantaged and impoverished students. One way to close this achievement gap is through principals who practice effective leadership and cultivate a positive school climate and culture where the staff tend to have higher morale and the motivation necessary to help their students. Bolman and Deal's four-frame model of leadership, as well as their concept of multiframe thinking, offers a way for leaders to recognize their leadership orientation and provides a means for which they may draw upon strategies from multiple frames, thereby enabling them to approach managerial issues with fluidity based on the changing circumstances. These ideas form the basis of this qualitative case study, in which the findings from a survey, two interviews, two observations, and artifacts revealed how the leadership style of a principal in an urban public school district influenced a positive school climate and culture. These findings underscored the importance of key practices in leadership, such as establishing a shared vision, including relevant stakeholders, building human and social capital, and encouraging collaboration. Leaders who execute these key practices, regardless of their leadership orientation, while applying the concept of multiframe thinking, tend to be more effective overall.
