Platinum-based alloys are known as effective catalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It has been demonstrated that {111} surfaces of Pt3Ni enhance ORR catalytic activity. To apply this feature into practical nanocatalysts towards the improvement of ORR performance with minimal cost, a wet-chemical synthesis approach to prepare Pt-Ni binary and Pt-Ni-Cu ternary octahedral nanoalloys of which all the surfaces can be taken as {111} facets was developed. Preliminary characterization data show that the synthesis of Pt-Ni and Pt-Ni-Cu nano-octahedra is repeatable, and the elements of platinum and nickel distribute evenly in the octahedral nanocrystals. The surface structure of the as-prepared nano-octahedra was further manipulated by CO-annealing and acid etching. ORR performance after these surface treatments has been investigated. Results suggest that the Pt-Ni and Pt-Ni-Cu octahedra exhibit higher ORR activity compared with the commercial Pt/C catalysts. The surface treatments on the catalysts have also impacted the mass activity and specific activity.
