This study focused on the parenting practices of Armenian American and European American mothers of children of ages four to eight. It examined parenting styles and the correlation between culture, education, immigration, and socio-economic status. The first hypothesis was that Armenian American mothers tend to be authoritarian, placing a high value on obedience and conformity with regards to behavior. The second hypothesis was that European American mothers tend to be authoritative, warm but firm: setting standards for the child's behavior with expectations which are consistent with the child's stage of development. A total of fifty-three mothers from both cultural groups completed a demographic form and the Parental Authority Questionnaire-Revised (PAQ-R) survey form, which determined parenting styles according to Baumrind's (1978) parenting typologies. The findings from this study suggest that there are no significant differences in the parenting styles of Armenian American and European American mothers. The literature reviewed does not provide much information about Armenian American mothers. The available literature on European American mothers suggests that this particular group would score higher on the authoritative parenting scale. This study however, found that to not be true, as both European American and Armenian American mothers scored high on the permissive parenting scale. Permissive parents exhibit behaviors that include high warmth and nurturance, as well as low control and demands for maturity (Baumrind, 1971). This study found no significant difference between the parenting styles of Armenian American and European American mothers. In addition, results from the demographic form indicate that both groups had very similar socio-economic status (SES) and levels of education. The findings of this study correspond to what the literature review suggests, and that is parenting styles do not vary heavily by ethnicity rather by socio-economic status, and that SES is a stronger indicator of parenting style. It is hoped that this project will encourage other researchers to continue learning about cultural, SES, and immigration issues as it relates to a group that has not been well represented in the literature.
