Performance anxiety is an issue that affects many musicians throughout the world. Although the topic of musical performance anxiety has been considered with regard to young adults and adults, the issue of musical performance anxiety among pre-adolescents and adolescents has not been addressed. The purpose of the study was to examine variables that are potential contributors to performance anxiety among middle school students in a solo and ensemble contest situation. Variables that were analyzed included levels of performance anxiety that students experienced at contest, and the effects of gender, performing medium, private lesson experience, performing by memory, audience experience, students' previous contest experiences, years of formal study, daily practice, preparation time, and the presence of an adjudicator on student anxiety levels. Also, the differences in anxiety between students receiving different contest ratings were examined. Subjects (N= 123) were males (n = 36) and females (n = 87) from the population of seventh and eighth grade students who performed solos at The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District VI Solo and Ensemble Contest in northeast Ohio. Subjects were chosen on the basis of their willingness to participate in the project. After their solo performances, students completed the state portion of Spielberger's State Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAI-C) and a researcher-designed questionnaire used to gather demographic information and students' self-reports of anxiety. Results revealed that students' self-reported anxiety corresponded to the results on the STAI-C; significant effects on anxiety were found for the presence of an adjudicator; and students with high state anxiety did not perform as well as those with lower levels of anxiety. Performance anxiety among middle school students in a solo music contest situation seems to be highly variable and based on the individual characteristics of each performer. The results of the study support the general findings of the literature on the topic in that performance anxiety is an important area of concern for musicians, including adolescent performers. Further research on performance anxiety and young musicians is needed.
