This study was designed to identify the impact of virtual reality (VR) and the virtual reality learning environment (VRLE) on the assessment outcomes of students in a middle school life sciences unit of study. The experiment was a quantitative 2 x 3 repeated measure mixed group quasi-experimental design with three variables. The two independent variables were instruction type with two conditions: middle school life science unit of study on space and space exploration taught with VR and VRLE augmented versus non-VR, traditional teacher guided instruction and phase with three conditions: pretest, posttest, and after 2 weeks test (to test for long-term retention). The dependent variable was the effects of VR on student understanding of a unit of study of space and space exploration in a middle school life science class. A total of 67 sixth-grade and 66 eighth-grade middle school students participated in the study. All 133 students received a standardized pretest and their scores were recorded. A total of 64 students received instruction augmented with VR in the VRLE and 69 students received traditional teacher-guided instruction. The results of the study indicate students receiving instruction augmented with VR in the VRLE showed mean results similar to those of students receiving traditional instruction, indicating VR is a viable method of instruction.
