Climate change is considered by both the public and the scientific community as a "wicked" problem and one of the most important environmental problems that humanity is currently facing. There is consensus between most climate scientists and the public on the direct links between human activities and climate change. Although most members of the public agree with climate scientists, there are also people who are skeptical on the relationship between human activities and climate change. The knowledge and evidence associated with climate change derives from studies and research conducted by academics at different universities and research institutes. There is little literature examining academics and their environmental behaviors, but within that literature, conference attendance and data collection are suggested as the two highest carbon footprint activities that academics participate in. Research also suggests that lay peoples' perception and confidence in climate scientists depend on the scientist's carbon footprint and environmental behaviors. As such, this study explores academics' perception towards climate change and examine their environmental behaviors in both their private and academic lives. Using a mixed methods approach, the analysis of quantitative data collected through a battery and the narrative of semi-structured interviews with academics in the US will inform this three-manuscript dissertation. The first manuscript discusses the perceived environmental behaviors of academics and their beliefs about climate change, the second manuscript explores the sustainability of academia as a working space, and the third manuscript investigates academics' disagreement on climate change.
