Sport is an important component of society, whether one is a participant or a spectator. In the United States, college sports attract as many fans and spectators as professional sports. For any college team, achieving six years in a row of winning the championship is a truly remarkable feat. This study investigated the baseball program at a small private Midwestern suburb university (MU) which has accomplished this and has been ranked number one in NCAA Division III since 2011. The purpose of this study was to investigate and understand the ways in which coaching and leadership have contributed to the successes of MU's baseball team. This study followed the Multidimensional Model of Leadership (MML) within the qualitative conceptual framework toward the goal of answering the research questions and understand the connection between coaching effectiveness and team success in MU's baseball program. The overarching research question which guided this study was, What role does coaching play in the success of Midwestern University's baseball team? This study used individual interviews and focus groups for data collection, then used thematic coding for data analysis. This study was significant because understanding the factors contributing to the stellar achievement of MU's baseball team helps other sport programs to learn from MU's success. In particular, the current investigation focused on the role of coaches. This study aided the field of sports management toward a goal of continual improvement in coaching methods, teamwork, and collegiate sports success.
