This qualitative study used the Ecological Systems Theory of Development and the Collaboration Theory as a lens to view the perceptions of urban school social workers and their ability to remove barriers in education of students. The school district personnel and the collaboration with urban school social workers provided insight into the various ways students receive support in order to address identified ecological issues. A deeper look into school district's policies, job descriptions, referral and discharge processes provided information into district personnel's understanding of the role of the social worker.The study produced findings which suggest the lack of a process for student identification and referral, a lack of understanding the role of school social workers, the further need for collaboration and communication within the school setting, and a lack of capacity to address the ever-increasing ecological needs of students. The interviews provided recommendations for the profession as well as suggestions for district leaders who are utilizing school social work services to remove barriers for student success.
