Social group identities form the basis of partisan attachments (Green, Palmquist, and Schickler 2002). But, how do these social group-party attachments get created, strengthened, weakened, and/or changed? In this dissertation, I use a series of survey experiments to investigate the role of political parties in influencing the dynamic nature of social group-party attachments. Building on expressive theories of partisanship, I argue that the signals the parties send about their commitment to status concerns of specific groups influence (1) perceptions of which groups are linked with which party, (2) the likelihood of group members forming (strong) attachments to the party, and (3) political behaviors such as voting for the party. Overall, my dissertation contributes to our understanding of the group foundations of partisanship while also speaking to important questions regarding representation - especially of underrepresented groups - in American politics.
