The increase in proxy wars' prevalence and the phenomenon's persistence after the end of the Cold War has triggered an interest in the study of the factors that affect the success and failure of proxy interventions. This thesis provides a comparative analysis of three cases, namely Iran-Hezbollah, Pakistan-Kashmiri insurgencies and South Africa-RENAMO to compare the factors involved in each case and draw conclusions on their respective roles in proxy relationships. The study focuses on 3 factors i.e. material support, ideological affinity and support and duration. The findings suggest that material support is not more significant than ideological affinity and support in achieving the principal's foreign policy objectives and that ideological affinity leads to less volatility in material support. Furthermore, the study finds that prolonged duration of proxy wars do not necessarily lead to the failure of the proxy intervention.
