Physiologically, the person is an individual with a perceived boundary. Personal space can be defined as the area individual humans actively maintain around themselves into which others cannot intrude without arousing discomfort. Personal space might be as small and concrete as an exclusive drawer in my childhood home or as large and abstract as the virtual space of power in the workplace. The importance of personal space is that it is born out of the need for self-consciousness to exist and be expressed. So personal space, for each of us psychologically, has a healing effect. However, we are also designed to desire intimate relationships, and how we navigate the delicate balance between space and our relationships is the subject of this thesis. For the purpose of this research, I will focus mainly on close friends. When a relationship becomes remote or online-only, people cope with the transformation of the relationship by mentally changing their personal space.
