The first documentation of the standard playing card deck, or "pip" cards in Italy occurred in the 1370s when Florence and Siena both prohibited "a certain [card] game called naibbe" (a word that is Arabic in origin) as a form of gambling. By the early fifteenth century the Italian-born carte da trionfi, a newly conceived deck with sixteen figure cards, had a significant impact on the material world and leisure-time pursuits of elites in such diverse cities as Ferrara, Milan, and Florence. And by the early sixteenth century, interest in carte da trionfi by then having evolved into carte da tarocchi, spread from noble tables to taverns, brothels, and courtesans' apartments. Originally intended as a "liberal" form of recreation meant to reinforce virtue among the nobility, card games of chance acquired a sinful connotation and were treated as gateways to further vices like drinking, blasphemy, and sodomy. We know from the multitude of civic laws, legislation, and court records that both men and women were drawn to gambling with cards. Yet, for females (in particular), across the social classes, the practice opened what were otherwise impossible economic opportunities. This occurred despite the art and literature of the period representing female sex workers as gamblers, cheats, and detriments of society as a whole. This dissertation explores the "tactics" employed by women in early modern Italy in their embrace of the printed card deck as a new form of material culture. Trading on slippages in early modern texts and images about virtue and vice, and labor and leisure, it traces 1) the introduction of hand-painted card decks as respectable diversions in elite circles in Italy in the late middle ages, and their subsequent popularization with the rise of print culture, 2) the widespread use of card decks across the social spectrum and their history in gaming and gambling for financial gain, with particular emphasis on their impact on women, and 3) the range of spaces in which women turned what was increasingly held to be a corrupting activity into an opportunity for financial profit or gain. Coverage ranges from the design and decoration of cards and their place in material culture to the spatial dimensions of card play and its representation in painting and print.
