Canelita and Other Flavors is a collection of interconnected short stories that revolve around a Mexican American family in Southern California. These stories shift characters, generations, subjects, and styles, to encapsulate the multifaceted identities of Latino people and explore the intersectionalities in which they encompass. The internal struggle of recognizing one's potential and qualities as an individual, especially in relation to social context, is found frequently throughout this narrative. This collection incorporates themes of masculinity, sexuality, gang life, drug use, expectations, morality, death, success & failure; they are addressed within the subtext, characters, and plot. As with all fiction, there lies some "truth" within these stories.
