People with mental illness (PWMI) face increased likelihood of negative personal and social outcomes, as compared to the general population. The public's experience of negative feelings, attitudes, and behaviors toward PWMI, termed mental illness stigma (MIS), is thought to be one of the major contributing factors to these poorer outcomes (Rusch et al., 2005). To inform the development and implementation of future anti-stigma interventions, this study utilized a cross-sectional design to investigate the relationship between two constructs, gender and cultural worldview, as they relate to MIS. A nonprobability snowball sample of 262 American citizens aged 18 or older was recruited in two waves via social media and professional networks. Depending on sample wave, respondents self-reported their reactions toward three of the following DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) diagnoses: pedophilic disorder (PD), transvestic disorder (TD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), histrionic personality disorder (HPD), female orgasmic disorder (FOD), and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Participants categorized PD as masculine, ASPD as gender neutral, and TD, HPD, FOD, and BDD as feminine. As in past research (Boysen et al., 2014), respondents endorsed the greatest level of stigma toward diagnoses they perceived as masculine. Like Angermeyer and Dietrich's (2006) findings, moderated hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated limited influence of respondent gender on MIS: woman in this study were more likely than men to endorse greater stigma toward PD, but analyses found no other statistically significant influence of respondent gender on MIS. Analyses did show statistically and practically significant evidence that respondents who held more hierarchical than egalitarian worldviews (see Kahan, 2012) were more likely to endorse greater MIS toward TD, HPD, and BDD. Analyses also indicated that respondents who held more communitarian than individualistic worldviews were more likely to endorse greater MIS toward HPD and BDD. However, analyses did not provide evidence of an interaction effect for gender and cultural cognition worldview variables. To understand implications for future MIS research and anti-stigma interventions, these results must be understood through the broader lens of sex negativity and repronormativity that pervades the sociohistorical context of the U.S.A.
