Depression is a global epidemic for which treatment is necessary for recovery. Depression treatment in Canada is a complex issue for South Asian adults. The South Asian population is the largest minority group in Canada, faces health disparities, and has been identified as disadvantaged when it comes to mental health treatment. A systematic review was employed to identify what evidence-based treatment options are available and effective in reducing symptoms for South Asian adults experiencing depression. This review was conducted in line with preferred reporting items or systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Results outline 18 studies which were included in the review (1,691 participants). Efficacy for depression treatments for South Asian adults was illustrated for cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), positive psychology, pharmacotherapy, and complementary, alternative, and integrative treatments including yoga and relaxation strategies. The dominant treatment displaying efficacy in reducing symptoms was CBT. A common theme among the treatments was cultural adaptions either to content or service delivery of the intervention. Depression treatments for South Asian adults show promise in reducing symptom severity and symptom reduction and were found acceptable by participants. Implications of the findings are discussed. Conclusions are presented with caution and with the recommendation to conduct further research.
