Many individuals view sex offenders as being the most dangerous criminal. This could be cognitions and behaviors that have been developed by past experiences that led them to view sex offenders in this light. Due to this view, the public often wants the maximum sentence length to be given to these individuals. There are sentencing guidelines that have been developed and put into place for judges to follow to make sure that there is an equal sentencing of these offenders. However, there are cases where this does not happen, and often times different sentence lengths are being given. Different factors such as race and gender of the sex offender could be an influence on the sentence length that is given. It was found that there was a difference in the sentence length between male and female sex offenders. There was no difference as race being a moderator between female and male sex offenders. It appears that with the factors examined, gender of the offender is a significant factor in the sentence received.
