Research in support of this thesis was conducted in two phases. The first phase includes an analysis UMass Lowell's overall energy profile, as described in Chapter 2. Since UMass Lowell is an educational institute, the campus energy profile is highly diverse. UMass Lowell's facilities/operations have a mix of uses, including but not limited to: classroom settings, research laboratories, dormitories, libraries, administrative buildings, athletic centers, conference centers, heating plants, vehicle fleets, etc. UMass Lowell's energy consumption was analyzed for fiscal year (FY) 2019, by utilizing energy consumption reports, campus energy monitoring software, energy purchase records, etc. for different campus buildings and campus transportation. UMass Lowell's energy loads are primarily met through the consumption of natural gas and grid electricity. The work and research completed as part of the first phase of this thesis was a collaborative effort between two graduate students, Ryan Green and Arti Gupta.The second phase of this thesis involves investigating a potential solution to improve UMass Lowell's sustainability through the use of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, as described in Chapter 3. In this thesis, a campus-wide solar PV feasibility analysis has been conducted. As part of this analysis, the existing UMass Lowell buildings are assessed for potential roof-mounted solar PV systems. This includes preparation of conceptual solar PV layouts, energy production estimates, and greenhouse gas (GHG) equivalency calculations. The purpose of this analysis is to assess potential new roof-mounted solar PV systems at UMass Lowell, which in turn will improve the the University's renewable energy portfolio and will reduce campus consumption of grid-electricity.
