This dissertation presents an untold story about the resurgence of medieval memory arts throughout the nineteenth century. Beginning in the Romantic era, I examine how these new "artificial memory" systems responded to the pressures of an expanding print market. While their initial revival promised to keep the problems of print ephemerality at bay, printed versions of memory systems quickly evolved to harness the capacity of new print technologies. In so doing, they changed conceptions of the mind's relationship to print, sparking a revolution in philosophical and aesthetic literary ideals. For example, though scholars tend to agree that the Romantic era gave rise to a new preoccupation with literary "imagination," the introduction to this dissertation argues that S.T. Coleridge developed his influential theory of imagination as a refutation of the reading cultures constructed through artificial memory systems. Further, because memory arts took many forms during the nineteenth century-from print memory palaces that instructed readers to memorize paper rooms filled with mnemonic objects to large engravings that depicted entire centuries of history through mnemonic images-they inspired many different kinds of literary response. I view each system as a discursive site that reveals how debates about memory and reading evolved as well as how those debates came to be classed and gendered. My third chapter, for example, considers Jane Austen's reference to memory practices in Mansfield Park-Fanny's attempt to "make an artificial memory" to help Mr. Rushworth learn his lines for the play Lovers' Vows-in order to show how this seemingly offhand reference actually reveals Austen's representation of a gendered ethics of memory that animates the novel. By recovering a culture of memory that has been lost to us, my dissertation seeks to expand and deepen our understanding of key literary works as they imagine ways beyond a historical memory shaped by patriarchy, empire, and war.
