This was the first known study to directly examine framing patterns through eye tracking technology. Eye movements and arousal levels were measured while participants were given a standard framing task. Applying Fuzzy-Trace Theory, it was predicted that less eye fixations would predict standard framing effects (risk averse when options are framed as gains and risk-seeking when options are framed as losses), and that greater arousal would predict loss avoidance. First, our results showed that overall, our sample did not show the standard framing effects. Second, choices between sure and gamble options was not predicted by patterns of eye movements. Third, choice of the gamble was found to be positively associated with higher arousal. Finally, the order of options presented significantly affected choice, indicating previous research appears to be bias in the order of options presented.
