Traditional photos, drawings, and models cannot fully capture the dynamic and unpredictable life of buildings. In this thesis I explore methods of visualizing transformation through continual change and question how our representational toolkit can respond to architecture's temporal nature.I used catalog and tract houses as the focus of my study, as they allow for a direct comparison to their original state. Through representation, I observed how the suburban neighborhood transitions from serially produced copies to a unique urban condition indirectly through homeowner-led adaptations. The result: a piecemeal urbanism that was never intended. An accumulation of many needs, desires, and fragmented decisions defines a new built environment for the public. In speculative drawings, I leveraged the large amount of individual changes to depict a new collective future. Instead of overlooking the way that architecture gradually changes, and by accepting and even promoting this as a productive method of evolution, we can allow a new kind of responsive urbanism to form.
