This thesis explores possibilities of interpreting the combination of the liminal space within our daily life and city culture with a network system. Public transportation creates many kinds of interactions, and the subway system is a main transportation in New York City which allows people to have more opportunities exploring this city. Defining spaces next to subway entrances as transitioning points, the space around them has a high potential to be created as a "third space"." "Third places," or "great good places," are the many public places where people can gather, put aside the concerns of home and work (their first and second places), and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation." -Ray Oldenburg, The Great Good PlaceThird spaces can also be related to liminal spaces, which we spend a lot of time traveling in and experiencing everyday and we might not notice. Through several transitions, liminal spaces are where one's lifestyle has been shaped. Based on the ideas mentioned above, this thesis project aims to create a network system distributing in Manhattan, and each spot provides neighborhood information and different space usages. Two sites have been selected for different relationships between storefronts and subway entrances, and further tests with the difference within these sites. The facade of each site will be blurred by several components, activities and interactions presenting the liminality between interior and exterior. Street furniture and infrastructures like subway entrance, bicycle racks and benches will be integrated in these spots and take over the sidewalk spaces. Making these spots engaging in people's path actively in order to create an awareness of transitions in the city, which provides people with a new life experience.
