Chapter 1 introduces the topic of the dissertation which is the uniqueness of the intercessory prayers in Paul's letters to the Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon (ECP) when they are compared to his intercessory prayers in his earlier epistles. Their uniqueness is identified by their length, variety of requests, and various elaborations in their context.The relevance of this study to the modern church is the fact that so many believers struggle to pray. At the same time current NT scholarship has neglected the biblical subject of prayer because of its supernatural nature and difficulty in assessing it. The solution is to use the Bible as a guide to prayer and understanding prayer. The Bible records numerous prayers and material related to prayer. The prayers of the NT are significantly helpful. The intercessory prayers of Paul are particularly beneficial. But, the prayers of ECP offer the greatest help because of their uniqueness. In chapter 2 the question of what influenced Paul's understanding of prayer will be investigated. He may have been slightly influenced by prayer in Greco-Roman literature, but most likely he was more influenced by Jewish literature from the OT and literature of the Second Temple Judaism period. His understanding of prayer was even more influenced and transformed by his Damascus Road conversion to Christ, his calling and ministry as an Apostle, and his exposure to the teachings of the ancient church. The question of whether Paul was the author of Ephesians and Colossians is the subject of chapter 3 because the answer to this question determines how to interpret and apply the prayer material in ECP. Although strong arguments are given against the genuineness of these two letters, the arguments for Paul's authorship of ECP is stronger and given more credence by the autobiographical material in ECP, long history of belief in the church, and early manuscript support.The intercessory prayers of Paul in his earlier letters are the subject of chapter 4. Several prayers in these letters are thought to be similar to Paul's letters in ECP, except that these prayers lack the length, variety and uniqueness of the requests and elaborations in their context when compared to those in ECP.Chapter 5 examines the intercessory prayers in ECP to determine their uniqueness when compared to the intercessory prayers in Paul's earlier letters. The two intercessory prayers in Ephesians (Eph 1:15-23; 3:14-21) are the two longest and offer the greatest variety of requests and contextual elaborations in all of Paul's letters. The intercessory prayer in Colossians (Col 1:9-14) is the next longest with a variety of unique features when compared to other letters in the Pauline Corpus. The intercessory prayer in Philemon (Phlm 4-7) is of good length and depth considering the overall shortness of the letter and offers unique features. After an investigation of the context of each letter, all four intercessory prayers of ECP are examined.The uniqueness of Paul's prayers in Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon is the topic explored in chapter 6. Eleven features from the prayers of ECP are identified and discussed for their uniqueness when compared to the prayers in Paul's earlier letters.Chapter 7 explores how these unique features from chapter 6 can be employed in the prayers of the modern church and individual believers to strengthen their understanding and practice of prayer. This will demonstrate how the careful attention to the Bible can positively impact the prayer experiences of modern Christians. Chapter 7 also gives a concluding summary of the dissertation.
