The objective of this study was to examine pragmatic skills in adolescents and young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. It was hypothesized that the participants with hearing loss will display delayed pragmatic skills compared to the participants with normal hearing. This study utilized a nonexperimental, group-comparison design. This study's format was designed to assess individuals with hearing loss' pragmatic abilities and compare them to individuals with normal hearing. Ten participants were recruited with ages ranging from 13 to 22 years. Participants engaged in two standardized language assessments and a 10-minute conversation portion. Results showed statistically significant differences between the two groups on the CASL-2 and PPVT-4. The qualitative data showed several reoccurring themes regarding the pragmatic abilities of the DHH group. This study showed the importance of better understanding the pragmatic abilities of African American adolescents and young adults with hearing loss.
