This thesis is an in-depth analysis of the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CSFP). The major focus of the research has been towards its strategy in Southeast Asia, using the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a framework. The project has firstly done a historical overview of the EU and the development of its CFSP, evaluating its problems and challenges. Secondly, it has evaluated the CFSP in Southeast Asia, going over colonialism, the historical and economic relations between the EU and ASEAN, as well as its current strategy in the region. Finally, it gives two policy recommendations to improve and reformate the CFSP in Southeast Asia. In order to perform this analysis, the thesis has used a qualitative methodology rather than a quantitative one due to the nature of the CFSP and of the policy recommendations. The objective of the research has been to provide EU policy makers with a different approach when formulating the CFSP in Southeast Asia. By implementing the recommendations, this thesis seeks to show that the EU external trade policy in the region can greatly benefit from having a well-formulated and coherent foreign policy strategy. These recommendations seek to help ASEAN further increase its integration by establishing the mechanisms under which regional identity and cooperation can be fostered. For the EU this is very important as by having a more integrated and functioning ASEAN, it can enjoy a more reliable and institutionalized economic block with whom it can trade and fully benefit from its economic potential and dynamism for the decades to come.
