China faces a development challenge to reduce child malnutrition and infant mortality. This dissertation examined the patterns and determinants of these two dimensions of child well-being in two studies. The child growth study involved 1,162 urban and 2,639 rural children 2 to 5 years-old. Child height, infection symptoms, household food consumption, socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental characteristics were collected. The infant mortality study collected infant mortality rates, socioeconomic indices, and government health care expenditures (GHCE) in 91 counties. Multivariate analysis was used in both studies within a structurally ordered conceptual framework, and reverse causality was accounted for by two-stage least squares procedures. The child growth study found that poor growth performance existed mainly in rural children, and the lower the overall level of growth, the greater the urban-rural growth difference and the greater the inequality of growth distributions across populations. In rural children, poor linear growth was strongly associated with low household energy levels, infection, and small birth-weight values. A strong synergistic relationship was found between low household energy and child infection in their effects on child height. In urban areas, infection only slightly affected child height. No effects from household energy and its synergism with infection were observed. Total household expenditures significantly determined household energy availability in urban and rural households, and food prices generally did not. Child infection in rural areas was related to less educated household heads, the absence of protected latrines, more young children in a household, and household crowding. None of these factors were significant in urban areas. The infant mortality study showed that infant mortality rates were much higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The gross value of industrial and agricultural output (GVIAO) was negatively associated with infant mortality rates. When GVIAO was substituted by income and GHCE, income levels did not predict child survival, but higher GHCE levels were strongly and negatively associated with the risk of infant death. Illiteracy rates strongly predicted infant mortality in all models. And infant mortality rates in "poor" counties were more responsive to changes in illiteracy and GHCE than in "rich" counties.
