Through its interdependence with ideology and social structure, sport acquires a political character reflecting the unique qualities of the society of which it is a part. As a system of ideas and beliefs which broadly explain, rationalize and justify a society, the institution of sport "reflects, reaffirms and reinforces prevailing structural relationships and ideological definitions."('1) Only in recent years has sport been perceived by scholars interested in the analysis of social institutions as an institutional framework within which ideology and social structure operate. The prevalence of "western bias" and a "normative view" among most of these scholars, however, has had a limiting effect on the current development of insight into the relationship between sport, ideology, and social structure. In some studies, for instance, it was assumed that sport inherently was invested with certain qualities which were consistent with the ideological and structural arrangements of societies, and that certain goals, as end products of sports activities, were universally accepted within a society. It has been demonstrated by Karl Mannheim and others, however, that social position and social change lend themselves to the development of variances in goals and outlooks within society.('2) The primary concern of this work is to analyze the sports institutions of the United States and China and the interplay of the sports institution with social structure. The analysis also presents some evidence testing Edwards' proposition that the institution of sport "reflects, reaffirms and reinforces prevailing structural relationships and ideological definitions," testing the proposition that sport varies between societies in terms of the extent to which it is invested with various ideological definitions and structural characteristics, and testing the proposition that as societies change there is a reflection in sport of the changes in ideological definitions and structural relationships resulting from the political changes that are coming about in the society. . . .
