The Chuc(')i is an anthology of Chinese poetry the earliest extant text of which dates from the second century A.D. The poetry anthologized therein reflects a complex and diverse poetic tradition which this study describes in part. Chapter One states the problems of the study of early Chinese poetry and explains my intention to focus on formal features of the Chuc(')i poetry. Chapter Two discusses the problems of authorship and Qu Yuan as originator of the poetry. Chapter Three isolates the feature of repeated sentences in the poetry, analyzes their distribution and concludes a chronology of parts of the historical implications of the phonology of the language of the Chuc(')i as it is reflected in the rimes. It presents a description of phonological change in the Chuc(')i poetry and compares the language of the Chuc(')i to that of the Sh(')ij(')ing. Chapter Five describes stages in the Chuc(')i tradition as reflected in the analysis of its formal features and concludes an historical statement on the origin and establishment of the Chuc(')i.
