This journal article analyzes how the 3 major philosophical and religious traditions in Chinese principles influence the perceptions of mental illness, its effects on family involvement, and their influence on the meaning of recovery. The three major philosophical beliefs rooted in Chinese tradition are Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. These views and values are still predominantly practiced in Mainland China, Chinese immigrants, and some Asian American families. Disclosing an individual's mental health diagnosis to people outside the family may engender feelings of shame and guilt. Implications for professionals, clinicians, and family members are provided to increase mental health awareness in Chinese communities and potentially incorporate family members into interventions and support groups.
