The dissertation is a case study of the Chinese-born, globally working contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang. My exploration of Cai Guo-Qiang's career building from the period of 1986 to 2008 traces his migration from China to Japan to the U.S., paying attention to the ways in which the artist has strategically transgressed the limits of established art historical periodizations, national genealogy, and 20th century institutional norms while engaging in emergent globalized artworlds in the plural. Through the lens of what I refer to as the "global artist," the dissertation seeks to understand the differential institutional terrains of global artworlds in the late 20th and early 21st century that Cai has astutely navigated throughout his career. In so doing, the dissertation approaches Cai's artworks as material visual artefacts with specific formal properties coded with histories of major art movements, lineages of concepts, and preconceived models of aesthetic and anti-aesthetic gestures, which indicate the artist's knowing, ongoing effort to shape and recalibrate his circumstances, informed by, among other things, his acute knowledge of the mutually constitutive discursive landscape in which he operates.My analysis draws on regionally distinctive aesthetics, discursive formations, and exhibitionary practices in specific Asian and Western locales within which Cai Guo-Qiang's career has taken shape. I am as interested in how the globalization of artworlds is conceptualized in and shaped by scholarly discourse as I am in the ways in which it is materialized. Therefore, the dissertation seeks, more broadly, to illuminate various forms and mechanisms of regional artworlds in which we can observe how various agents produce their own modified discursive iterations and redistribute them as localized responses to the broader contemporary conditions of possibility in this field of art. My analysis of Cai's modalities of art making, modes of his self-fashioning, and institutional regimes of reception throughout divergent artworld locales attends to the cross-cutting networks, subjectivities, and aspirations with which they are enmeshed. Artists' efforts to understand and navigate the contemporary condition for which there is not yet a map to adequately guide one, are central to my own endeavor to refocus art historical inquiry.
