The exponential rate of migration of people in the past decades has displaced and reconstructed family life and redefined the roles of its members, as their relationships no longer just depend on their geographical proximity but also on how they relate to each other across national borders. In the context of the Philippines, around 1 out of 10 households in the country has a family member working overseas. In this scenario of the global flow of human labor and the corollary growth of transnational families, unfortunately, the situation of the children left behind is relegated to the margins of concern related to this phenomenon. Moreover, migration studies in the Philippines still predominantly represent the perspectives of the adult migrants, especially the mothers in the context of a feminized Philippine migration. Transnational labor migration has impacted on the left-behind children, rendering them in liminal position, a transitional state of being "in between"; of being neither there nor here; of being left behind in the sending country, but whose life is being oriented towards the receiving country of a migrant parent. To adapt to this changing landscape, children resort to another, albeit inextricable landscape, the media and communication technologies that bridge this position of time-space liminality. Children's lives now are increasingly mediatized, with communications technologies as an integrated structure of affordances that sustains transnational familyhood. An emerging research paradigm in communication research that looks at this changing landscape where left-behind children are growing is called "mediatization". Mediatization is "a concept used to analyze critically the interrelation between changes in media and communications on the one hand, and changes in culture and society on the other" (Hepp, 2013, p. 619). Thus, this dissertation built its inquiry using this framework to investigate the mediatization of transnational familyhood and its consequences in the family, particularly to its left-behind children. The study asked the question: How is transnational familyhood mediatized and what are its consequences on the children left behind? After conducting in-depth interviews with 20 pairs of parents in Hong Kong and their children in the Philippines, reviewing documents of news and policies related to Philippine migration, as well as analyzing social media posts of my interviewees, this study concludes that the mediatized environment of global care circulation, transnational communication, and media representations of transnational familyhood makes prominent the migration imaginary among left-behind children and has produced for them a state of liminality where they contend with the ever-sustaining global neoliberal enterprise of labor migration.
