The present study explores whether the refugee woman's sense of social isolation decreased after participating in a psychosocial group. It also assesses the participants' levels of depression and the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD). The study participants were women referred to a mental health center in the Midwest. Nine Bosnian refugee women ranging in age from 45 to 59 participated in the study. Group sessions were held biweekly for a six-week period. All of the group participants, prior to participating in the study, were diagnosed with depression, PTSD, or another mood disorder. Pre-and posttests of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Post-Traumatic Symptom Scale-Interview (PSS-I) were administered. The posttest scores on the loneliness scale and the total score on the PSS-I were lower on the posttest than on the pretest. The PSS-I subscales of arousal and avoidance were also lower on the posttest than on the pretest. The pre- and posttest scores on the BDI did not change. Each participant also completed a nine-item postgroup questionnaire. The majority of the group participants stated that they made new friends and enjoyed the group outings. The Bosnian women's group quickly developed a sense of cohesion. The group members maintained contact with one another outside of the group and became acquainted with each other's extended family. A developing sense of empowerment was evidenced by the group members' ability to demand that the group continue after the study was completed.
