Leadership is an integral part of promoting organizational goals and meeting the mission. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine followers' perception of their Federal healthcare sector leader's authentic leadership behaviors measured by the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) and followers' perception of their Employee Engagement using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9). Past studies have shown Authentic Leadership within an organization provides a positive work environment. However, the relationship between leaders and followers for fostering Employee Engagement has not been examined in the Federal healthcare sector. This research study may assist leaders in better understanding employee engagement among Federal healthcare sector employees and the influence Authentic Leadership behaviors have on promoting a conducive work environment. A total of 191 employees participated in completing the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) (Avolio et al., 2007) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale -9 (UWES-9) (Schaufeli et al., 2006) surveys. Multiple regression was used to examine the relationship between the independent variables of Authentic Leadership behaviors and the dependent variables of Employee Engagement. The study results indicated demographic variables age and ethnicity predicted Employee Engagement. Authentic Leadership behaviors: self-awareness, moral perspective, and relational transparency had significance in predicting Employee Engagement.
