The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how women describe the use of perceived power and situational determinants that facilitated their placement on top management teams (TMTs) in Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Southeast Texas. The theories used for this study's theoretical framework were the career development theory and the theory of planned behavior. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 40 participants for the study's survey and ten participants for the study's semi-structured interviews. Data for the study was collected and derived from an online survey and semi-structured interviews. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze all data collected in this study. Four categories emerged from the thematic analysis process, producing three themes. The three themes derived from the data addressing and answering the study's two research questions were: (1) maintaining a cognitive mindset affixed to career aspirations and goals, (2) aligning and adapting social and behavioral mannerisms to align with the corporate environment, and (3) using and maximizing all internal and external resources for career advancement. The study's results indicated that the use of perceived power and situational determinants helped women secure placement on top management teams.
