Racial identity, and military identity may be related to the postdeployment reintegration concerns of military personnel transitioning to veteran status. The purpose of this study to fill the gap in research that does not address the intersectionality of racial identity, military identity and their relationship to postdeployment reintegration. The study examined if a relationship existed between racial identity, military identity, and postdeployment reintegration. Utilizing three instruments (i.e., Cross Racial Identity Scale, Warrior Identity Scale, and the Postdeployment Reintegration Inventory), the racial identity, military identity and postdeployment reintegration of a sample of African American male veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring freedom were analyzed. A multiple regression was performed to find predictive relationships between the variables. A significant predictive relationship was found between racial identity, military identity, and postdeployment reintegration. The multiple regression coefficient conservatively explained 46% of the predictive strength. There was also a significant relationship found between racial identity and postdeployment reintegration and military identity and postdeployment reintegration. Recommendations for future research cover several areas that will close the gap in research, aid in competency for counselors and counselor educators, and address assessment and preventative programs for those who work with veterans. This study serves as a foundation for additional research in the area of the effects of identity on reintegration for veterans.
