The purpose of this study is to examine how discrimination affects the ethnic identity of Mexican Americans. Social identity of Mexican Americans is posited to take four manifestations, with these manifestations influenced by subjective (person) variables and objective (situation) variables criteria. The bases of these manifestations emerge from an interaction of the dimensions of individualism-collectivism and cultural assimilation--autonomy. The ethnic identity that is hypothesized to be most affected by discrimination is the one composed of Mexican Americans who are collectivistic and autonomous, for this is the manifestation where ethnic identity is most salient and where cultural maintenance is highest. The data for the analysis comes from the National Chicano Survey (1979), a representative sample of people of Mexican descent living in the United States. The results supported the hypothesis--that discrimination has a significant effect on the ethnic identity and self-esteem of the hypothesized group of Mexican Americans. Also, adding to the importance of the results was the fact that the effects of mediating variables of discrimination (e.g., education, English ability, income, etc.) were statistically controlled. Finally, the findings are discussed in terms of the potential for collective action among Mexican Americans and implications of the findings for the increased incidence of discrimination today.
