The purpose of this basic interpretive qualitative research study was investigating the perceptions of LGBTQ+ college students regarding their out-of-school literacies and the impact of their participation in a non-academic writing group focusing on their out-of-school writing and identities. Situated within the New Literacy Studies (NLS) perspective, this study utilizes data collected from transcripts of individual interviews and writing group meetings, artifacts, field notes, and analytic memos to answer the following research questions designed to address gaps in the literature pertaining to NLS, out-of-school literacies, and LGBTQ+ college students: (a) What are the perceptions of LGBTQ+ college students regarding their out-of-school literacy practices and experiences (i.e., literacy events)? and (b) What are the perceptions of LGBTQ+ college students regarding the impact, if any, of their experiences participating in a non-academic writing group?Participants were three college students self-identifying as LGBTQ+, and as writers, who agreed to participate in four individual interviews and a non-academic writing group. Results revealed that the participants expressed positive perceptions of their out-of-school writing and experiences participating in the non-academic writing group. Implications are provided for researchers, such as the need to conduct case studies aimed at investigating LGBTQ+ students? out-of-school writing, in addition to teachers supporting their non-academic writing. The findings offer further implications for practice, including the necessity of integrating the out-of-school writing of LGBTQ+ students into their educational experiences to a greater extent and the demand for facilitating non-academic writing groups designed for this student population.
