Amy Beach was among the most gifted American composers of the late nineteenth-century. From her earliest years as a child prodigy through her late career as a composer and pianist, Beach was able to devote her life to music. Her success may be attributed in part to the careful, conservative nurturing her parents and husband provided; in this respect Beach's accomplishments are characteristic of the successful women artists. Nonetheless, when taking into account the restrictions within which nineteenth-century women composers worked, and her own ambivalence over the appropriate roles of women in music, her life and music become more significant for her remarkable accomplishments. One of her compositions, the Theme and Variations, opus 80, an unpublished work, the theme is unusually solemn and melancholy; in the six character variations Beach expands the affective limits of the nineteenth-century variation set in a subtle and expressive manner.
