There were ten editions of the Harmonielehre of Rudolf Louis (1870-1914) and Ludwig Thuille (1861-1907) between 1907 and 1933. Thuille died shortly before publication of the first edition--leaving Louis to supervise the editions of 1908, 1910, and 1913. The fourth edition (1913) includes corrections and minor revisions of the original text, and additional examples and appendices that remain intact in later printings. This edition is the source for this translation. Designed as a textbook for classroom use, the work is both practical and philosophical. It contains many assignments and descriptive musical examples, but not without discussions of theoretical and aesthetic considerations. Divided into two sections, the Harmonielehre first explores diatonic harmony and then chromatic and enharmonic harmony. Extensive, logically planned summaries of chord connections and appendices treating parallel voice-leading, church modes and exotic harmony play an integral part in the overall scope of the text. The translation is generally accessible to English speaking scholars. Some annotation has been included to correlate terminology and clarify problems in the German text. An introduction discusses the various editions and attempts to place the book in the theoretical and pedagogical traditions of the early 20th century. The translator believes that this opus--now in English--will secure a prominent position within the literature of music pedagogy.
