My thesis critiques different roles available for women in patriarchal societies presented in three Gothic novels, Matthew Lewis's The Monk (1796), Charlotte Dacre's Zofloya, or the Moor (1806) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Each novel introduces three available female roles: pious virgins, promiscuous whores, and a third type of women, who become active and sexually knowledgeable, yet remain virtuous. In this project, I examine how Lewis, Dacre and Stoker similarly criticize their innocent women for their passive femininity, and denounce their evil promiscuous female characters for their overt sexuality. I then explore the differences in the conclusions of each novel in terms of whether these authors reestablish patriarchy or condemn and destroy it. Lewis perpetuates patriarchy, but also introduces a representation of his ideal female model, one who is powerful and sexually knowledgeable, but righteous and humble. Unlike Lewis, Dacre does not reassert the status quo. Dacre kills all her female characters and does not present a new feminine ideal, thus emphasizing that Zofloya is not a moral tale that aims at perpetuating patriarchy; rather it undermines it and condemns its repressive institutions. Finally, Stoker like Lewis regains the patriarchal ideology. He then suggests patriarchal transmission to the next generation of men by introducing Mina's and Jonathan's son. Nonetheless, even though Stoker reestablishes patriarchy, at the end of Dracula he also presents a replacement ideal female figure, who is sexually experienced, yet righteous.
