Previous research has indicated that online health information seeking is prevalent and on the rise. However, limited research exists about Instagram as a health information source, specificallyweight loss related. To bridge this research gap, this study investigated the factors that contributeto weight loss information seeking on Instagram. Themes and factors related to weight lossinformation seeking on Instagram were developed through an exploratory, sequential mixedmethodsdesign employing Grounded Theory as methodological foundation. Qualitative contentanalysis-utilizing open coding-was employed to develop codes based on 5,020 commentscollected from 251 Instagram posts. Codes were developed into themes and also used for aquantitative statistical factor analysis. The study found that foundations in information authoritymay resonate with the theoretical indications of the content and factor analyses, resulting inperceptions of quality, appearance, and social connection as important markers of weight lossinformation seeking on Instagram. The findings have both theoretical and practical implicationsfor physicians, librarians, and health information providers that disseminate health information, including strategies for engagement through Instagram. Future exploration of theories ininformation authority may lend more understanding to the phenomenon.
