My dissertation work provides an overview of what is enjoyable about designing games and what can be done to make the game design process more enjoyable. Game designer's interactions with the design process is deconstructed into four subsystems of fellowship, self-discovery, expression, and challenge. Insights from interviews with game designers provide design guidelines for building a customized enjoyable design process for positive work experiences in game studios. This preliminary research finding leads to an inquiry about the challenges faced by gaming professionals, designers, and studio executives in the industry. Insights from a qualitative study present five core design areas of concern. Existing design expertise models, key performance indicators and best practices used in design organizations are reviewed for a solution. A new design maturity framework is presented based on these studies, that defines and measures various dimensions of game design practices in the key focus areas of game studio operations, game designer experiences, player experience research, value-sensitive game development processes, and game design theories. The objective of using this framework is to foster enjoyable workplaces, sustainable studios, and well-researched digital entertainment product design.
