In response to the plethora of global crises along with the marginalization of the arts, this is a theoretical dissertation exploring the question, "Why does art exist? If art has a function and purpose, what is art's function and purpose?" I sought to summarize a unifying concept of the arts across disciplinary fields. I discuss the misnomers and emphasize the applications for the arts especially for learning, but also business, health, and other fields. A variety of studies and research formats from an array of disciplines are integrated in relation to the arts through a transdisciplinary synthesis of critical aesthetics and scientific theoretical perspectives. To present my findings I use a somewhat traditional paper format along with an arts-based method exhibit. Throughout my dissertation I utilize arts modalities as an example of the concepts in my paper at work. I have found the arts serve diverse purposes because their nature is fundamental to biological functioning. Ultimately, the arts essentialize sensory information into symbolic meaning to quickly comprehend complex concepts for immediate response and prolonged retention while providing exercise to develop physical and mental acuity and regulate body/mind states. In short, the arts communicate experience quickly for improved reflexes and long-term learning (Bangert & Shlaug, 2006; Beittel, 1991; Dewey, 1934/2000; Dissanayake, 2000; Bateson, as cited in Firth, 1996; Guthrie, 2005; Huston et al., 2015; Ramachandran & Hirstein, 1999; Shimamura, 2013; Shlain, 1991; Solso, 2003; Zeki, 1998).
